Grass Grid Parking Area - Nat Bailey Stadium Overflow
Nat Bailey Stadium, Vancouver, BC
Grass Grid Parking Area Installation
Installation of permeable grass grid system for overflow parking
The Project
The solution was a grass grid parking system—an innovative permeable paving method that supports vehicles while allowing grass to grow through the grid, reducing runoff and heat island effects.
Our Solution

Site Preparation and Excavation
We began by excavating the designated overflow parking area to the required depth, removing existing soil and debris to prepare for base installation.

Base Installation and Grading
A well-compacted granular base was installed and graded to ensure proper drainage and load distribution. This base supports the grass grid system and prevents settling.

Grass Grid Installation
The permeable grass grid panels were laid out across the prepared base. These grids provide structural support for vehicles while allowing grass roots to grow through the openings.

Soil and Grass Seeding
Topsoil was spread within the grid cells, and the area was seeded with a durable grass variety suited to withstand vehicle traffic and Vancouver’s climate.

Final Grading and Watering
The surface was graded for optimal drainage, and watering was initiated to encourage healthy grass growth within the grid system.
The Results
A Sustainable, Functional Parking Solution
The grass grid parking area provides a durable, permeable surface that supports overflow parking needs without sacrificing green space. It reduces stormwater runoff, minimizes heat retention compared to traditional pavement, and enhances the stadium’s natural landscape.
This system offers a balance between functionality and environmental responsibility, perfectly suited for public venues like Nat Bailey Stadium.
Benefits of Grass Grid Parking
Permeable Surface
Allows rainwater to infiltrate, reducing runoff and erosion
Environmental Impact
Maintains green space aesthetics and reduces heat island effect
Load-Bearing
Supports heavy vehicles during events without damage
Low Maintenance
Grass grows naturally with minimal upkeep
Cost-Effective
Less expensive than full concrete or asphalt paving for overflow areas
